Nochlezhka holds #notwelcomehere event in Yusupov garden. Signs with unusual warnings appeared in one of the main city’s recreation sites: “No entrance. For you”, “No family calls. They won’t listen”, “Hide the children. They can be taken away”, “Sit quietly. No laying down”, “Go away. Come tomorrow”, “Don’t think. Too scary”, “No rest. You don't deserve it”, “Be unsafe. We don’t care”, “Need a job? Find money”, “Don’t communicate. Danger of a fraud”, “Take care. No treatment for you”, “Way out. You won’t find it.”

Each warning is based on stories of injustice faced by the residents of Nochlezhka’s shelter. All signs are marked with #notwelcomehere hashtag, it describes the society’s attitude towards the homeless. Using this tag on Nochlezhka’s social networks accounts and website citizens can find real stories of homeless who have faced unjust and cruel treatment for a variety of reasons.

“A lot of things hinder the homeless from getting out of the street: problems with finding a job due to residence registration absence, high prices for rent and even higher for purchase of housing, ineffectiveness of state social service… But the main thing is the rejection of society. People don’t want to talk to homeless, they despise them and even wish them death - if only they did not disturb. All of us, home owners, eliminate the homeless from our life, as if to say to them: you are not welcome here. We hold this event for people to stop for a second and understand that those on the street live a very hard life. And that anyone can become “unwelcome”, says Grigory Sverdlin, Nochlezhka charitable organization chairman.

The concept and design of #notwelcomehere event was created pro bono for Nochlezhka by the Great advertising group, which has been supporting the charitable organization for several years now.

“We all face bans every day - and even small restrictions are annoying. But there are those who are prohibited from almost everything. We tried to imagine how many absurd restrictions appear in front of a homeless person - they stand in front of him like a wall, wherever he goes. Moreover, these restrictions often come not from the state and law, but from the society, from you and me, and we shall keep that in mind”, commented the Great advertising group representatives on the event.
